Google: rich snippets are not for your home page

In an online discussion, Google’s Gary Illyes said that rich snippets markup should not be used on the home page of a website:

“Review rich snippets should only be used in cases where ‘the main topic of the page needs to be about a specific product or service.’ — using them on your homepage in general wouldn’t be like that.”

In other words: rich snippets are great for product pages but not for the main page of your website.
