  • Paid blog networks get penalized by Google

Have you seen services that offer thousands of backlinks with no work for a relatively little price and no work? These offers look very tempting but they are also very risky. This month, another of these link building networks was penalized by Google.

    What exactly has happened?

Google has made it clear that they are against link and blog networks. In the past months, many networks have been hit by Google’s paid link penalties. Many of the websites that participated in these networks were banned from Google.

This month, it hit a blog link building network with the name BuildMyRank.com. In their official blog, BuildMyRank.com confirm that they have been penalized by Google:

“This morning, our scripts and manual checks have determined that the overwhelming majority of our network has been de-indexed (by Google). […] For the time being, BMR will be shutting down our service in its current form.”

According to a discussion in an online forum, a tool with the name SEO Link Monster faced the same problem:

“As of yesterday, all 3 sites I’ve put into the system are tanking BADLY! […] I’m starting to think that Google is not only discounting the links from the SEO link-monster network, but also punishing my sites for getting backlinks from the network. […]

I put 3 sites in, keep all other backlinking the same, and ONLY the sites that are getting SEO link monster backlinks are going down big time.”

If you were thinking about using a fully automated backlink solution, you should reconsider your plans.

Fully automated solutions are tempting but they are also extremely risky

We all don’t have much time to promote our websites. For that reason, many people fall for the promises of shady internet marketers that promise quick and easy solutions.

Many of these spam methods work great for some time. That’s why so many people use them. When (not if) Google finds out that you are using such a method to promote your website, chances are that your website will be removed from Google’s index:

Ethical SEO methods work much better

If you use ethical SEO methods, it will take a little longer until you get high search engine rankings. However, your rankings will grow steadily and you’ll get a much better performance in the long run:

Do not use spammy SEO methods to increase your rankings on Google. It will backfire on you.

Ethical search engine optimization is about everyone winning.

Ethical search engine optimization leads to a symbiotic relationship:

    • Search engines: They win as they are provided with pages that are easy to understand and that contain the quality information that their visitors search for.
    • Searchers: They win as they are getting what they ask for from the search engines. They search for "green widgets" and get a page about green widgets.
    • Website owners: They win as they are getting quality visitors who are interested in what their website has to offer.

Find peace of mind and secure your rankings

SEOprofiler only uses ethical search engine optimization methods that play by the rules. You will get lasting results and your rankings will be safe if you use SEOprofiler to optimize your web pages.

KaizenKaizen is Japanese for “improvement”, or “change for the better”. It refers to a philosophy that focuses upon continuous improvement of processes in manufacturing, engineering and business management.

According to Wikipedia, Kaizen is “a process that, when done correctly, humanizes the workplace and eliminates overly hard work”.

At SEOprofiler, we’re continually improving our tools to make sure that they make your life easier. Even small improvements can contribute positively to the overall user experience.

The link manager in SEOprofiler now makes contacting other websites easier

    backlink manager

The link manager in SEOprofiler is a powerful tool that helps you to build new links to your website as efficiently as possible. Starting today, the link manager automatically adds an entry to the contact history when you contact a link partner.

Step-by-step: how to use the link manager

There are several ways to add links to the link manager:

In this example, we will use the hub finder tool to find new websites that will link to our site.

Step 1: add a new website to the link manager

We have used the hub finder tool to find websites that link to at least two of our competitors:

    advanced hub finder

In this example, the hub finder has found 3,116 websites that link to more than one of our computers. Many of these sites link to 4 or more of our competitors so it is very likely that they will also link to our website.

Click the ‘Add’ button to add a website to the link manager. After clicking the ‘Add’ button will change to a ‘Show’ button:

    link manager show

Click the ‘Show button’ to view the newly added website in the link manager.

Step 2: contact the other website

When you add a new website to the link manager, we automatically retrieve contact information for the site. You can view that information in the ‘Contacts’ box:

    backlink manager contacts

To contact the other website, click on the green/white arrow button next to an email address. Your email program will open a blank message to that address and a new entry will be added to the contact history:

    backlink manager

Ask the admin of the other website for a link to your site and you’re done. It’s as easy as that. Managing your backlinks is very easy with the link manager in SEOprofiler.

After getting the link from the other website, the link manager will regularly check if the other websites still link to your site, if they have added the rel=nofollow attribute to the links, etc.

    Many more improvements

In addition to the change in the link manager, we have made several other improvements to SEOprofiler in the last few days.

For example, the dashboard now shows up to 50 projects at once by default, the project overview page now offers one-click access to all tools, the manual can be selected with one click from every page, the server performance has been improved, a character counter has been added to the description boxes for the custom PDF reports and more.

Last week, Matt Cutts, head of Google’s anti-spam team announced that Google is working on a penalty for over-optimized websites. What does this announcement mean to your website and how should you react to this announcement?

Matt CuttsHere’s what Matt Cutts said in detail:

"We don’t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit.

All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over-optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now."

Does this mean that you shouldn’t optimize your web pages anymore?

This announcement is aimed at people who are trying to push the limits too far. Of course, it is perfectly okay to add your keywords on your web page and it is also perfectly okay to exchange links with other websites.

    risky SEO methods

Actually, all of these methods can have a very positive influence on the Google rankings of your website. The problem starts when these elements are overused. This usually happens when you use fully automated tools and services to promote your website.

For example, it is likely that the following SEO methods will get your website in trouble:

    • automated link exchange networks that add your link to hundreds on other websites
    • tools that automatically create fake forum accounts and comments with a link to your site
    • tools that automatically create keyword rich web pages for you on your website

Fully automated solutions always mean spam when it comes to SEO

Google wants to show high quality web pages in the search results. Web pages that have been created automatically cannot have the same quality as a web page that has been created by a human editor.

Fully automated solutions lead to low quality links and content that is not helpful to the average web surfers. Businesses that "optimized" their websites with these methods are the ones who will be hit by the new ranking filter.

If you see the words "fully automated" and "hundres" or "thousands" in one sentence that you can be sure that the advertised product or service is spamming and your website will get in trouble if you promote it with these methods.

Don’t panic and create a symbiotic relationship with search engines

If you haven’t used the spam methods described above to promote your website, then your Google rankings won’t be in trouble.

    safe SEO methods

The common sense approach to link building

When you build links to your website, you want lasting results. It does to not make sense to invest your time in search engine optimization methods that are just a flash in the pan.

How do you judge the quality of a website? What is a good website and from which web pages should you get links?

    PageRank is not so important

The PageRank of a website is not that important

Many webmasters only want to get backlinks from pages with a particular PageRank. While you can use this method, it is usually a waste of time and it makes link building more difficult than it really is.

If a website has an overall high quality then it does not matter if the page with the link to your website has a low Google PageRank:

    • If a high quality website adds a new page, the new page will have an initial PageRank of zero. Nevertheless, the page can still be very good.
    • A page that has a PageRank of zero today can have a high PageRank tomorrow.

If only pages with a high PageRank had a chance, it wouldn’t be possible to get new pages in Google’s result page. Experience shows that new pages appear in Google’s results every day.

In addition, the PageRank that Google publicly displays is not the actual PageRank that Google uses in its algorithm and the PageRank value can be manipulated.

Common sense leads to lasting results

You do not need special metrics to judge the quality of a web page. When you find a web page that could link to your site, ask yourself the following questions:

    • Does the linking page look good to the average web surfer?
    • Does the page have interesting content?
    • Is the content somewhat related to my website?
    • Does it make sense if the web page links to your site?

If you can answer all questions with “yes” then you should try to get a backlink from that page. It doesn’t matter if that page has a low PageRank.

Google tries to imitate common sense with its algorithm. If you use common sense to build your links and follow the tips above, you make sure that the backlinks to your website will count in all future updates of Google’s algorithm.

For example, the hub finder tool in SEOprofiler can help you to find these related websites. Use all link building tools in SEOprofiler as explained in this manual to get the best possible results for your website.

    backlink hub finder

    Summary

    • Don’t focus too much on metrics such as Google PageRank.
    • Use common sense to determine the quality of a web page.
    • Building links with this approach leads to lasting results.

Last week, Google announced changes in the way they evaluate links. How does this affect your website rankings and how exactly does Google evaluate links?

    What exactly did Google announce?

Google announced several changes of the ranking algorithm. The most important change was the change of the backlink analysis:

"Link evaluation. We often use characteristics of links to help us figure out the topic of a linked page. We have changed the way in which we evaluate links; in particular, we are turning off a method of link analysis that we used for several years. We often rearchitect or turn off parts of our scoring in order to keep our system maintainable, clean and understandable."

What does this mean for your web page rankings?

Unfortunately, Google doesn’t go into detail. As mentioned in Google’s statement, Google uses "characteristics of links" to figure out the topic of a linked page.

We’ll take a look at the characteristics below. Then we’ll try to find out which element could have been changed.

    Google link characteristics

Characteristic 1: the text of the link

The anchor text of a link has been the most important factor for a long time. If many sites link to a page with the anchor text "green apple" then the page will get high rankings for the term "green apple".

Characteristic 2: the link power of the linking page

Links from pages with many inbound links have a higher influence than links from pages with few backlinks.

Characteristic 3: content and page proximity

If you sell shoes on your website then the link to your website will have a bigger impact if the text that surrounds the link to your page is about shoes. If the link to your website is surrounded by totally unrelated text then the link won’t count as much.

Characteristic 4: link attributes such as nofollow and title

Links that use the rel=nofollow attribute don’t affect the position of your web pages on Google. Some webmasters think that using title attributes can have a positive effect if these contain the targeted keywords. Others think that this could trigger a spam filters.

Characteristic 5: redirects and shortened URLs

Redirects and shortened URLs such as http://bit.ly/a4X4th are URLs that redirect to another URL. Should these URLs carry full weight when it comes to calculate the position of a website?

Characteristic 6: the age of a website

The older a link is, the more Google tends to trust that link. Links that remain for a long time seem to have a bigger impact than links that come and go.

Characteristic 7: the affiliation of the linking sites

Links from websites that have the same owner and links from affiliates may have a different influence on the rankings of a web page than links from websites that are not affiliated with the page.

Of course, we can only speculate what Google has changed. It is likely that Google now only considers the anchor text of a link if that link is placed in the right context (page and content proximity). Another possibility is that affiliate links (redirected or with page variables) will have less influence on the rankings of a page.

If you have followed the tips and tricks of this newsletter in the past then Google’s change won’t have any negative influence on your website rankings. Just continue to get good backlinks and optimize the content of your pages. You can analyze the different links that point to a website here:
