SEO checklist – part 2: how to make sure that your web pages will get high rankings

Getting high rankings can be complicated if you do not have a clear plan. In the first part of our SEO checklist, we took a look at the technical things that should be checked. This week, we’re taking a look at the on page factors that influence the position of your web pages on search engines.

SEO checklist - part 2

On page factors that influence the rankings of your web pages

1. Check the titles on your web pages

The pages on your website should have individual title tags. The titles should contain keywords that are related to the content of the pages, and you should use as many different related words as possible in the different titles on your website.

Checking the titles of your web pages can be a time-consuming task. Fortunately, the website audit tool and the Top 10 Optimizer tool in SEOprofiler can help you to do this as efficiently as possible.

2. Check the meta descriptions of your web pages

Not all pages need a meta description as Google can create snippets based on the content of your web pages. In any case, you should not use duplicate meta descriptions on your web pages. The website audit tool finds these.

A good meta description can make sure that your web page gets the click on the search results page. Google has increased the limit for the meta description lengths. Write compelling meta descriptions that make people want to visit your web page.

3. Check the headlines on your web pages

Headlines make it easier to parse your web pages. Use headline tags (h1, h2, h3, etc.) to structure your web pages. Just like the title of a web page, the headlines should be closely related to the content of the page.

The headlines can also contain a call-to-action. If your web page contains multiple paragraphs, it is usually advisable to use subheadings.

The Top 10 Optimizer tool in SEOprofiler checks if your headlines contain the elements that are needed for high rankings.

4. Check the keywords that you use on your web pages

Modern search engines rank topics, not keywords. That does not mean that you shouldn’t optimize your web pages for keywords anymore. It means that you have to use many different keyword that are all related to the topic of your website.

Optimize different pages of your website for different keywords that are related to your site. Your website becomes more relevant to the topic of your website if it contains many pages that are related to that topic.

The website audit tool in SEOprofiler shows you the topics that search engines can find on your website. The Top 10 Optimizer tool in SEOprofiler helps you to make sure that your web pages are relevant to particular keywords.

5. Check your web page navigation and your website structure

The navigational elements on your website should contain important words that are related to the linked pages. Use menus with short anchor texts.

The URL subfolders on your website should have a logical hierarchy that matches the navigational menus on your website. Each page of your website should have a unique URL. If a page matches multiple categories, use the rel=canonical attribute to specify the main URL for the page.

Editorial links in the content of your web pages have more weight than links in your navigation. If it makes sense to link to other pages of your website in the content of a page, don’t hesitate to do it.

6. Use structured data markup code on your web pages

Structured data markup code enables you to offer Google additional data that can be used for rich results on Google’s result pages. Bing and other search engines also use structured data markup code.

The Rich Results Creator tool in SEOprofiler helps you to create structured data markup code for your web pages.

7. Make sure that your web pages work without JavaScript

Your web pages should work without JavaScript. You can use JavaScript to enhance the look of your web pages, but the main content should be available without using JavaScript. Disable JavaScript in your web browser and take a look at your pages. If your web pages don’t look good, you should improve them.

If you have an old website that still uses Flash, remove all Flash elements. The Flash Player has been deprecated and has an official end-of-life by 2020.

8. Make sure that your website works on mobile devices

If possible, use responsive web-design with your website. Responsive design makes sure that your website looks good on all devices: desktop computers, tablet computers, mobile phones, etc.
