Matt Cutts: how Google chooses titles for search results

In a video on YouTube, Google’s Matt Cutts explained how Google chooses the titles for search results. Google wants the title of the snippet to match the query of the searcher because that often leads to higher click through rates. For Google, the perfect web page title:

  • is relatively short
  • has a good description of the page and the site
  • is relevant to the search query

If the existing title of a page fits, Google will use the original title tag. Otherwise, Google might use the content on your page, the anchor texts that are used to link to the page and the Open Directory Project to create a new title.
