Google: how to rank individual pages on your website

Google’s John Mueller explained in a webmaster hangout on YouTube how to rank individual pages of your website. There are several things that you can do if you think that a particular page of your website should be ranked instead of the home page of your website.

Step 1: create relevant pages

Google will show a page on the search results page if it has relevant content:

“Make sure that you really have that content covered well on those blog posts. And maybe have it a little bit clearer on the home page that [the home page] is not about that content.”

Step 2: optimize your internal links

Google uses the anchor texts in your internal links to rank web pages. The titles of your web pages are important, too:

“The context we pick up from internal linking is really important to us as well. So with […] the anchor text […] that you’re giving to those blog posts within your content – that’s really important for us.”

Step 3: optimize your web page titles and headings

The structure of your web page is also important. Important terms should appear in the title of your web pages and the headings should make it easy to parse your pages:

“Make sure you have clear titles on those pages, […] use clear headings, […] structure content in a way that’s easily readable.”

Don’t use keyword stuffing

John Mueller says that it should be clear what your web pages are about without stuffing keywords on your web pages:

“[Present your content] in a way that [it] is really clear that this is about this topic without resorting to keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is is that one thing where sometimes I see people saying ‘Well, if I mentioned my keyword twice on this page then surely if I mention that 500 times it’ll be even better.’

In practice what happens with our algorithms when we look at that page and we see this keyword is mentioned 500 times and we’re like ‘Probably this page is really irrelevant for that keyword because they’re trying to artificially promote it so much with those keywords that maybe we should just ignore it completely for those keywords.”
