Which content is king? How to analyze your competitors to improve your own website.

Great content is the key to high rankings on Google. This is easier said than done. If you do not know which content you should create, this advice doesn’t help you at all. Which keywords are good? Which content is good for high rankings? Which pages attract visitors?

Fortunately, the competitive intelligence tools in SEOprofiler have the answers to all of these questions.

Get the best content ideas for your website

Analyzing your top competitors will help you to identifying the content that should be on your website. Take a look at your top competitors and find out where they are successful and you are not. This is a proven concept that is very easy to do with the competitive intelligence tools in SEOprofiler. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: identify your competitors

To identify your competitors, just enter the URL of your own website in the Ranking Profiler tool in SEOprofiler an open the ‘Competitors’ page. If your website is new, there might not be many pages. In that case, enter the URL of a close competitor. You will get a list of websites that compete for the same topic:

Step 2: find the keywords for which your competitors have high rankings

Just click the zoom glass icon to get an overview ot the Google rankings of the competitor:

In this case, the competitor has Google rankings for 20,677 keywords. On average the pages of the competitor are ranked on position 16, which is quite good for so many keywords. Click ‘Ranked keywords’ in the menu to get a detailed list of the keywords for which the website has rankings:

Use the filters above the keyword list to find particular keywords. You can also use the CSV export feature if you want to work with the keywords (and other data) in a spreadsheet application such as MS Excel or Libre Office.

Keyword ideas for your own website

Check the keywords for which your competitor has high rankings. Chances are that there are many keywords that you haven’t considered yet. In this example, your website is listed for 43 keywords for which the other website also has rankings (see ‘overlapping keywords’ in the first screenshot above). Given that the other website has rankings for 20,677 keywords, there might be a huge opportunity.

Of course, there will be terms that are inappropriate (competitor keywords, keywords for products that are not available from your website, etc.). However, you will quickly find the missing keywords in your search engine optimization strategy so that you can beat your competitors.

For each keyword, you get the estimated number of searches and the estimated big. That enables you to quickly find the best keywords for your website.

Step 3: find the top pages of your competitors

The ranked pages of your competitors are a good way to get content ideas for your own website. Click ‘Ranked pages’ in the menu to view the pages of the competitor website that have the most rankings:

Check the content of these pages. There might be something on the pages that is not available on your own pages. Improve the content of your own pages to make sure that your website can be found for all keywords that are relevant to the topic of your website.
